It Can Wait - No Text On Board

In 2010, AT&T launched the "It Can Wait" campaign to educate consumers on the dangers of texting and driving - with specific focus on teens, who text five times more than adults on average. AT&T also created the AT&T DriveMode app, which sends an automatic message letting people know that the user is driving and will reply to texts and emails when it's safe.

Now, NextGen and other organizations are joining with AT&T to permanently change behavior, urging everyone to pledge not to text and drive. September 19th is "No Text on Board - Pledge Day." For more information, see the It Can Wait campaign site, and to be even more active in the campaign, visit the "Get Involved" section of the site.

Do you have ideas about texting while driving? What do you think we should do to encourage drivers to put down their phones and focus on the road?

Carmen at the International Welcome School

On Saturday, August 4th, 2012, NextGen's founder and president, Carmen Jacob, volunteered at the International Welcome School in St. Louis.
Carmen helping parents sign their kids in at the International Welcome School
Opened in 2009, the St. Louis Public Schools' International Welcome School provides students with accelerated English training, an introduction to the US culture and school system, and exposure to educational expectations and opportunities. English Language Learner (ELL) teachers, counselors, social workers and program instructional coordinators assist and monitor students' development in listening, speaking, reading, writing, math, science and social studies, and degree of self confidence and ability to adjust, before transitioning students into a regular classroom environment.

Carmen helps parents enroll their children in the school lunch program and sign up for vaccinations.

A native Guatemalan who moved to the U.S. 24 years ago where she started NextGen in 1997, Carmen understands the cultural and linguistic challenges that people face when they cross borders, and helping these kids to adjust to life in the United States is important for their future success.

NextGen welcomes these families to the U.S. and is looking forward to seeing them succeed in and add value to the St. Louis region.

What else do you think St. Louis should do to welcome immigrants and promote their successful transition to life here?
